Unlocking Wine Knowledge

Welcome to a new way to learn about the world of wine

James Flewellen innovative wine study guides, especially for WSET wine exams, also make perfect wine gifts for wine lovers.

Grape varieties, wine styles, soil types, effects of rivers and oceans, the weather… Once you start getting into it, there’s a lot to wrap your head around to understand a wine region.

There’s also a lot of information out there, online and in books. There’s a lot of good information – but it can be dense, overly detailed, sometimes expensive, and possibly out of date. There’s also a lot of bad information – simplistic, inaccurate, or just plain wrong.

The product of years of research, my infographic wine guides present this information in as clear, concise and simple a manner as possible – but without compromising on the detail.

The entirety of France is covered in two sets of paper study guides aimed at wine novices and wine experts.

They are rigorously researched, using the most up-to-date facts and figures available. They don’t skimp on the detail, yet they are graphically designed to present the information for each region clearly, concisely and beautifully.

Designed with the wine student in mind, they follow closely the syllabus for the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET). Each single piece of paper contains a summary of relevant information about a particular wine region with Level 3 and Level 4 students in mind.

They are also affordable, with the price of one study guide – about the cost of a decent bottle of wine.

Wine lovers, journalists and anyone interested in getting to know the wines of France a little better will also appreciate these beautiful guides.

These are not only visually gorgeous, but provide a crystal-clear compendium of the region that can be absorbed in a couple of minutes.

Unboundedly useful, I highly recommend them for any wine student.

What’s inside

The front page of each wine guide contains a concise introduction to the wine region.

The front page of each wine guide contains a concise introduction to the wine region.

Each wine guide comes as a B5 pamphlet (176 mm wide x 250 mm high; approx. 7 in x 10 in). They are beautifully printed in full colour on high-quality 300 gsm satin paper, using sustainable paper and inks. A matte laminate coating offers some extra protection from any spills. Printing is carbon neutral. Wine guides are either 2, 4 or 6 pages, depending on the amount of detail in each region.

The wine guides cover virtually all French wine regions, in two series. You can purchase a single guide, or a pack of the complete series. The packs (of either 5 or 10 guides) come at a discounted price compared to purchasing individual guides.

You can see a short video introduction to the guides here.

Complete series

The ‘Complete’ series is designed for those really getting into the detail of a wine region. As a guide, it covers the syllabus up to (and often exceeding) the WSET Level 4 Diploma. There are eleven guides in this series:

  1. Bordeaux (6pp)

  2. Burgundy (6pp)

  3. The Rhône Valley (6pp)

  4. The Loire Valley (6pp)

  5. Languedoc-Roussillon (6pp)

  6. South-West France (6pp)

  7. Beaujolais (4pp)

  8. Alsace (4pp)

  9. Provence (4pp)

  10. Eastern France (4pp)

  11. Corsica (2pp)

The guides in this series contain a lot more detail than those in the introduction series. More appellations are included and there is a greater emphasis on soil types, climatic conditions and wine styles produced. There are various pie charts, bar charts and tables that provide useful contextual information allowing you to gain greater insight into the region. Each guide in this series generally contains:

  • A more detailed, yet still concise, written summary

  • Context map

  • Infographic maps showing most appellations along with geographical features

  • Summary boxes for each major appellation with vineyard area, production volume, grapes grown, soil types & wine styles produced

  • Climate data – rainfall, growing degree days, elevation – for towns in the region

  • Contextual pie charts and bar charts

  • Table showing comparative climate data for other, comparable, global wine regions

Reviews

I cannot recommend these highly enough. Every WSET/sommelier student should be on the Flewellen website right now, ordering their pack. Every restaurant or hospitality business with a wine-education programme should be ordering them for their staff. And everyone running corporate wine tastings should be ordering them for their clients. They are fun, bold, smart, educational and modern.

These wine guides are an impressive achievement. They have a beautiful, innovative design that presents an enormous amount of information in an incredibly thorough, yet clear, way. Unboundedly useful, I highly recommend them for any wine student.

The[se] infographic wine guides are an essential purchase for all WSET students, but they are also very practical for “cracking the code” to help you quickly make sense of every French wine region.

– Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review

There is an overload of information available on the internet for most wine regions these days, with much of the information outdated or simply inaccurate. These guides condense the most essential information on the key wine regions of France into an easily digestible and tactile format. Maps are essential for really getting to the heart of a region’s wines, and the stripped back and modern layout here is an excellent way to do so. They are a great learning guide but perhaps even better revision tool to punch up on specifics heading into an exam, or simply to refresh the memory on the specifics of a region.

– Thomas Parker MW, Buyer at Farr Vintners

These maps look fantastic and I love that they have real infographics – like Wine Folly crossed with The World Atlas of Wine. They are informative, portable and really smartly designed. These would be incredibly useful for wine students.

– Fintan Kerr, Head Educator at Rack and Return

It can be really hard to organise the sheer volume of information you have to learn for wine exams, especially if it is new to you. These wine guides set out clearly the key facts to learn and display them in ways that complement one another.

Alongside focused text, the charts and graphs give you an immediate sense of what the region is like and how it compares to others – perfect for understanding how regional features shape wine style.

The maps are particularly clever, and the ‘London Underground’ style they employ illustrates very clearly what is most important – the geographical relationships regions have to one another, accompanied by easy-to-digest legends summarising the wines made.

Finding other study aids available at the time to be insufficiently focused on what I needed for exams, I spent a long time during my revision making my own maps that were half as clear as these and contained a quarter of the detail. I wish I'd had these to help me during my wine studies!
