Frequently Asked Questions
Who are your wine guides for?
Wine lovers! Anyone who is interested in French wine and looking to get more out of their wine tasting experience.
The ‘Intro’ series of guides is especially designed for those beginning their serious wine journey, and broadly covers the syllabus of the WSET level 3 award.
The ‘Complete’ series of guides goes more deeply into each region and broadly covers the syllabus of the WSET level 4 diploma.
Wine journalists and travellers looking for a guide to a particular region will also find these guides useful as a ‘cheat-sheet’ ahead of a visit.
What format do your guides come in?
Each wine guide comes as a B5 printed pamphlet (176 mm wide x 250 mm high or 7 x 10 inches). They are beautifully printed in full colour on high-quality 300 gsm satin paper, using sustainable paper and inks. A matte laminate coating offers some extra protection from any spills. Wine guides are either 2, 4 or 6 pages, depending on the amount of detail in each region.
The guides are easily transportable and fit happily in a bag or laptop case - perfect for taking to your favourite wine bar for some practical study!
What does each guide contain?
Each guide contains:
- A concise written summary of the region
- Contextual map
- Infographic maps showing major appellations and geographical features
- Summary boxes for each major appellation with grapes grown, soil types & production volume
- Contextual bar and pie charts
'Complete' guides go into more detail in each region and also contain:
- Climate data – rainfall, growing degree days, elevation – for towns in the region
- Table showing comparative climate data for other, comparable, global wine regions
Why are your wine guides paper? Can I get a digital version?
These guides are only available in paper form at this stage. We spend so much of our lives on screens these days. I have deliberately gone for a beautiful, tangible paper object for these wine guides. For deep learning and memory retention I find paper notes much easier to engage with on an active, conscious level. Plus, I have designed these guides to fit easily in a bag (or laptop case) so you can take them around with you, and they are compact enough to have on a table alongside a glass of wine and your notebook.
Digital versions may be available in the future. Watch this space!
How much does each guide cost?
Prices depend on the number of pages each guide contains. The price of a single guide ranges from £6 (2 pages) to £12 GBP (6 pages).
The price of one study guide is about the cost of a decent bottle of wine.
The multipack sets of guides offer a saving compared to buying the individual guides by themselves. The 'Introduction' set of five guides is £46 – saving 11%. The 'Complete' set of 11 guides is £98 – saving 14%.
Do you ship to my country?
Yes, most likely! We can ship to most countries, via Royal Mail tracked or ‘signed-for’ delivery service. There is free shipping for orders over certain amounts depending on shipping location:
- £70 for UK orders
- £100 for European orders
- £150 for the rest of the world
Free shipping is applied automatically at the checkout.
Do you only have guides to France?
Yes, at this stage. I would love to add other countries in the future. If you have a request for the next region we consider, let me know!
Can I get poster versions of your wine maps?
This is a great idea; we are working on it!
How frequently are your guides updated?
I use five-year averages for all the data presented in these guides, sourced directly from the most recently available authoritative source. Thus, each guide will remain relevant for several years.
I anticipate updating the guides approximately every three years.
I run a wine school, wine club or retail store; can I place a bulk order?
Yes indeed! Please contact orders [at] jamesflewellen [dot] com to discuss orders of 5 or more packs.
What is your environmental policy?
Printing is carbon neutral and paper from sustainable sources. Packaging is plastic-free and uses the minimum of eco-friendly, recyclable cardboard and paper.
